Friday, 17 March 2023 08:27 GMT

For the Official Programme, British rider Alex Lowes opened up on some details about him that you may not have known such as his heroes and why he races with the #22

With the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship well underway in 2023 and after two incredible rounds in Australia and Indonesia, some of the riders have been speaking to the Official Programme in a ‘Get To Know’ feature. One of these riders is Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) who, for the Grand Ridge Brewery Australian Round programme, discussed several topics to allow fans to get to know him better for both his on and off-track exploits. You can read the full Australian Round Official Programme HERE, and read Lowes’ answers below.

What has been your greatest racing achievement?

Probably finishing third in WorldSBK in 2019, because it is over a full season. I think more than winning the British Superbike championship – which also meant a lot to me. I am not taking anything away from the British Superbike championship but the difference in level was massive when I moved up to WorldSBK.

Why is your number 22?

My mum was born on the 22nd November. My brother, Sam, was racing in WorldSSP with the number 11 but, when he wanted to Moto2™, Sandro Cortese already had the number 11 so it then became 22 for both of us.

What is your favourite circuit?

If I had to race one circuit for the rest of my life, it would be Brno. I felt it was a track that, if you got it nailed, it was so much fun to ride. On the current calendar, I do enjoy Phillip Island.

Did you ever have a job outside of riding?

When I left school, I started working with my dad. He is an industrial electrician, so working in concrete plans, quarries, pulling bit three core cables around. I was still working when I won my first BSB race…

Who is your racing hero?

I have two. One would be Troy Bayliss because I loved how he rode, and he was doing great when I was getting into Superbike racing. But, before that, Mick Doohan. He lived to destroy everyone in every session.

What is your favourite film genre?

Action comedy. Not full comedy where it is a bit stupid, but Mission Impossible and that sort of stuff.

What were you best at in school?

I quite enjoyed school and dad made sure we knew that we had to work hard at school to go racing. I used to be quite good at maths. I think it is one of those subjects where you either get numbers or you find it very difficult.
